Both Microsoft and the manufacturers hope that the release of Windows 7 , set for Oct. 22, will help lift sales of PC held by the global economic crisis and give the holiday selling season year-end an extra boost.
The manufacturers have been testing early versions of Windows 7 by several months, but this week marks the launch of the "gold code" as an executive of Lenovo Group Ltd , referring to the way the software industry calls the finished product.
